Quilt Techniques: Foundation Piecing - Lois - South 2

Paper (or foundation) piecing can make your life easier when it comes to sharp points or tiny pieces. Learn the basics in this class while you make a nice border for a placemat! Or your sample can become a coaster, a pocket, part of a larger quilt.. Whatever you like. Lots of current books and patterns use paper piecing so you’ll be ready to tackle them all.

This class is a great start for beginners.

Supply List:

• Sewing machine and usual sewing supplies including open toe foot (machine must be in good working order and you must know how to use it)

• small rotary cutter and small board

• add-a-quarter ruler

• 6" x 6" square to trim block

• wooden iron or mini-iron and small pressing surface

• neutral thread

• small sharp scissors

• paper scissors

  Fabrics Needed

  • We will be doing a variety of blocks, none of which require much fabric. Now is your chance to check your stash and see what you have. An 8" square of each colour will be plenty.
  • Select a variety of fabrics including at least 3 greens, a tree trunk colour, some flower colours, some reds or pinks, a neutral or sky colour.
  • Choose fabrics with small allover patterns as this will hide the seams better. Avoid directional fabrics such as stripes (for now) since you usually don’t have a lot of control over the grain when paper piecing.
