Quilt Techniques: Christmas Stocking - Lois - South 2

Get yourself ready for the holidays and make your own Christmas stocking! This class is a great chance to use some of those decorative stitches on your machine to embellish your project. If you have an embroidery machine you can personalize the stocking too, or choose a fun Christmas print and companion fabrics to make it. Add a band at the top and you're ready to fill it with some Christmas goodies.

Supply List:

  • Sewing machine and embroidery unit (if applicable) (machine must be in good working order and you must know how to use it)
  • open toe embroidery foot
  • Seam ripper and other sewing supplies
  • Marking pencil to mark back for quilting
  • Decorative thread for the decorative stitches. Include some metallic threads if you want
  • Metallic machine needles if using metallic thread
  • Embroidery needles
  • extra empty bobbins (in case you want to match top threads)
  • Water soluble stabilizer (if using fleece for the band)
  • Tearaway stabilizer
  • freezer paper for toe and heel appliqué and trace pattern
  • glue stick to appliqué toe and heel
  • 12” x 20” cardstock or heavy paper for pattern.
  • fabric scissors

Fabrics Needed

  • small focal embroidery or novelty print for the centerpiece of your stocking
  • polar fleece or thermolam for band (mine was 7” x 20”) for a finished band of 3” (you can also use cotton fabric for the band if you want)
  • .1m (or scraps) of three or four coordinating fabrics for front of sock (one should be fairly plain so that the embroidery section will show up)
  • .3m fabric for back (scraps can be used on the front)
  • .3m Warm and Natural or Heirloom batting or 2 scraps no smaller than 13” x 20”
  • .5m muslin for “crazy quilting” base and backing of quilting
  • .3m fabric for lining (will not show on outside except just at edge of folded over band)
  • 4” cord to hang the sock (or you can make a fabric hanger)

Pre-Class Prep

  • If you have an embroidery machine, choose an embroidery design that reflects the person’s interests (or a nice Christmas design).  The design should be about 2” x 3” or smaller. To save class time, you can embroidery it at home on one of your “plainer” fabrics. No embroidery machine? – no problem.  Just choose a fun Christmas motif instead such as a santa, reindeer, Christmas tree
