Goats in Pajamas Workshop with John MacPhail - West 1



We are so excited to be hosting this special workshop with John MacPhail of Art East Quilting Co.! 

Hailing from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, John began Art East Quilting Co. where he publishes unique and fun quilt patterns as well as hosts interactive quilting projects. With a love for using quilts in various art forms, he has become known for his textile animal portraits, and enjoys spreading the love of quilting through various workshops ranging from traditional quilt techniques to modern unconventional thread application and quirky raw-edge applique pet portraits.

John has been featured in many quilt publications including Canadian Quilter, Love, Patchwork
& Quilting & Make Modern Magazine.

This interactive workshop will take you through all you will need to know to create dynamic quilt blocks using traditional piecing techniques with a focus on precision. John will share his best cutting practices, teach you how to find your best 1/4” seam allowance and let you on his secrets to precision piecing! There will be an exploration of the Stitch & Flip Technique, narrow piecing and point matching.

During the workshop, participants with create a goat in pajamas block from the Kidding
Around quilt pattern by Art East Quilting Co. This class is perfect for the advanced beginner quilter who dreams of taking on precisely pieced patterns or the experienced quilter who wishes to up their game!

Participants should expect to have a completed goat block by the end of the workshop that can be used to make a pillow, a wall hanging or become part of a larger quilt.

Supply List:

  • Kidding Around - Goats in Pajamas quilt pattern (available at Central)
  • sewing machine in good working order with usual accessories (you must know how to use your machine)
  • regular straight-stitch foot
  • iron (steam is preferred) and ironing surface/board
  • pencil or fabric marking tool
  • labels you may use to mark your pieces as they are cut
  • rotary cutter
  • grid ruler for cutting (I prefer the grid ruler of 24” x 6.5”)
  • cutting mat
  • pins (optional)
  • Materials needed:
  • 0.3 metres/0.3 yards of background fabric
  • 10” x 10” of goat head/body fabric
  • 6” x 6” of goat snout fabric in a contrasting tone to the head/body fabric
  • 2.5” x 2.5” of eye fabric (black or equivalent)
  • 2.5” x 3” of hooves fabric
  • 1.5” x 3” of horn fabric (white or equivalent)
  • 10” x 10” of pajama fabric
  • thread that will blend with all/most of your fabrics
  • Please have all your pieces pre-cut using the pattern cutting guide before class. We are making the Left-Facing Side Goat Block found on page 2.
