Great Start Beginner Quilting Series - Lois - South 2

Beginner quilters, this class is for you! Learn valuable quilting skills such as how to rotary cut and sew perfect 1/4" seams while you make this sampler quilt. Included techniques will be strip piecing, half-bias squares and quarter bias squares of varied sizes and instruction on how to make them whatever size you want. Some homework will be required to complete the top ready for quilting. The quilt can be completed in the Great Finish class, coming next spring.

Supply List:
  • Sewingmachine and accessories, including manual (machine must be in good working order and you must know how to use your machine)
  • ¼” foot
  • Neutral thread
  • Rotary cutter and cutting board
  • 6” x 24” ruler
  • 6” or 6 ½” square ruler
  • 12 ½” or 15” square ruler (optional)
  • Reference books (optional) “Around the Block” by Judy Hopkins

Fabric requirements:  (to be discussed at orientation)

Please choose 100% cotton fabrics (not flannel) with small prints or solid colours (trust me – you will appreciate my advice on this one).  You will find a quilt shop helpful when choosing this fabric. Choose a variety of lights and darks for the best contrast. You may prewash your fabrics if you want.

  • 1.5m background fabric
  • 1.5m focal fabric (a fabric that will be the dominant one in your quilt)
  • .5 m of 3 or 4 other coordinating fabrics
  • .5m of one of the above fabrics for the binding (which you will use in the Great Finish class)
  • Batting and backing – I recommend you wait until the quilt top is finished to choose this as you may want to alter the size.  You will not need the batting and backing until the Great Finish class.
