Fabric Landscapes with Crayon, Ink, Paper Collage AND Threadplay! - Darlene Bayley - South 4

Starting with a piece of white fabric, you will colour and ink your own individualized landscape (or city-scape, farm scene - whatever you desire!) Add elements of paper collage that may include images from magazines, newspapers, personalized photos and more.. Finally finish your piece with some basic thread play and quilting techniques and you will have a unique and personal artwork.

Supply List for Students:
  • 100% white cotton fabric - approx a fat quarter in size to work on. Please note that the higher the thread count of the fabric, the better result you will get. A Kona white or other from a reputable fabric company will be great. It does NOT have to be PFD (prepared for dyeing).
  • Inspirational picture if desired.
  • Crayola wax crayons (the bigger the box, the more colours you have to work with!). A pencil sharpener if the box does not come with one.
  • A soft craft mat or piece of batting to put under your fabric while you colour. It gives you a softer and more even finish.
  • Inktense pencil crayons (available at any art store). Depending on your compassion, purchase a few basic colours - red, blue, black, yellow and a green possibly. Your do NOT have to purchase the whole box of 72 at this point! The art stores sell them as open stock.
  • Container to hold water
  • Small paintbrush
  • For collage, the “glue” recommended is a Golden (or other brand) Gel Matte medium, available at the art store. I use a plastic pallet knife to spread it.
  • Collage elements - we will discuss in the first class as well. I collect words from advertisements, signs, “interesting” bits and pieces. Please take a look at my samples to get some ideas. Local magazines provide a lot of inspiration!
  • Pencil to draw with, ruler (straight edge), Micro or fine sharpie pen in black
  • For the final class, you will need your sewing machine (in good working order & you must know how to use it!), free-motion foot, thread selection etc. We will discuss this more in our second class.
