Ultimate Jean Fitting and Construction Workshop with Ron Collins - SOUTH 4

Can you imagine trying on 3 different jean patterns in a total of 37 sizes before you start to sew and cut into your fabric? Well, Ron has sewed the Closet Core “Ginger” pattern in both views A and B (sizes 0-20) and Jalie “Eleonore” (sizes 4- 22) for you to try on! The workshop will start off with you trying on the jeans and Ron identifying your fitting problems and will give you the necessary alterations (flat seat, protruding seat, low seat, knock/bowed legs, gaping waistband, length, etc.) for your pattern before cutting into your fabric. Also learn how to sew a hidden stay front to create a smooth and clean silhouette, giving the appearance of a flatter front. Sew the world’s best fly zipper technique that moves the zipper further into the garment and prevents the zipper being exposed at the center front. Learn tricks behind topstitching, bar tacking, belt loops, hammer in snaps, rivets and waistband applications.

SUPPLY LIST

  • Fashion Fabric (Washed and dried – twice)
    • suggestions: denim, linen, corduroy, gabardine, and twills.  I have also had student do the “Eleonore” jean in a “Ponte” which is a stable stretch knit. I used an 8 oz. stretch denim (98% cotton/2% lycra) for the “Ginger” jeans which is a great fiber content for this cut.  For the “Eleonore” fitting shells I used an 8 oz. (89% cotton/8%polyester/3% spandex) content with a 25% cross grain stretch.  You need a light/medium weight fabric with at least a 20% stretch in the cross grain for this pattern.  The fabric has to stretch in the cross grain from 65 cm to 80 cm for this  legging jean pattern.
  • Interfacing: I did not use interfacing in the “Ginger” jean to maintain the stretch in the waistband. I suggest using a medium weight weft interfacing like “Style Maker 601” if you do not want stretch in the waistband.  There is no interfacing needed for the “Eleonore” pattern.
  • Pattern: Closet Core “Ginger” and/or Jalie “Eleonore” (pattern # 3462)  There is an optional pattern for the pocket which is pattern #3461 for the “Eleonore”.
  • Pocket Lining (broad cloth or quilting weight fabric)
  • Thread
  • Contrasting top stitching thread (optional)
  • Schmetz Denim (H-J) Needles for Sewing Machine and Serger

                8 oz. denim – needle size 80/12

               10 oz. denim - needle size 80/12

               12 oz. denim - needle size 90/14

  • Pins, Scissors, Marking Pen, Measuring Tape etc.
  • Zipper: You can use a dress weight zipper or if you prefer a metal teeth zipper.  No zipper is needed for the “Eleonore” pattern.
  • Thread for serger
  • Rivets (optional)
  • Sewing machine
  • Serger (if you have one)
  • Thread for serger
  • Steam-a-seam- lite (1/4” wide)

I will have all 37 sizes in the 3 different patterns for you to try on:

“Ginger” (view A and B) in sizes 0 – 20

        waist 24” to 39”

        hip “33 to 48”

Eleonore (one view) in sizes 4 – 22

        waist 27’ to 44’

        hip 36” to 53”

I have also graded these patterns up in sizes if need be.  Also, if you are working with another pattern besides the two on the supply list, it is best that you show up with a muslin in that pattern to get a head start on the fitting.  Just make sure that the fabric that you are using for the muslin is very similar to the fabric you are using in the final jean!
