Sewing Machine Maintenance

Cleaning and oiling
is a major part of preventative medicine for your machine and must be done regularly to ensure a long life. It is recommended that after every 3-4 garments, your machine should be cleaned and oiled. Please note: Low maintenance models may not require the regular oiling at home, but don't neglect cleaning & regular service by a sewing machine technician.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED A TUNE-UP?
Your sewing machine should be tuned up by an experienced service technician every one to two years. This will vary with the amount of sewing you do. We have found that the degree and cost of repair required was greater for customers who waited longer than this to have their machine re- paired professionally.
You may request an estimate before any service work is done on your machine. The technician will call you with a quote before doing the repairs. When you drop off your machine, ask the service department when your ma- chine will be ready for pick-up. Also, ask the service technician for a few tips on maintaining your sewing machine.
o Remove the needle plate & brush lint away from the feed dogs. Feed dogs can become packed with lint & no longer move well.
o Next, remove & clean the bobbin case & shuttle hook (check your manual). Even the tiniest piece of lint can cause jamming & tension problems. Place a few drops of oil on a Q-tip and distribute it evenly inside the race.
o Check your manual for any other areas to be oiled specific to your machine.

HOW?
o Begin at the top of your machine and work your way down.
o Clean first, then oil. Use a small brush or a sewing ma- chine vacuum attachment to remove lint.
o Use a half-drop of sewing machine oil on all moving parts where metal rubs against metal.
