Serger 3-Thread Rolled Hems
A perfect rolled hem will roll the fabric with all of the threads meeting on the underside. The majority of sergers on the market today remove the left needle. There are however a few exceptions; check your manual under rolled hems.

Rolled Hem Applications:
§ napkins
§ serger pintucks
§ lettuce edging on knits
§ shell edging on tricot or lightweight fabrics
§ construction of lingerie
§ wired ribbon
§ fishline insertion for ribbons and bridal/evening wear

Steps for Setting up Serger for Rolled Hem

Thread your serger with the desired thread.
Wooly nylon looks nice in the upper looper with regular serger thread in the needle & lower looper.

Change Foot, Needle Plate and/or Lever (whichever your instruction manual suggests) This change will replace the wide stitch finger with a very narrow one, so that the rolled hem can be formed.

Remove the Unused Needle
If you leave the unused needle in the serger, wide loops may be formed because the thread catches on the unthreaded needle.

Tighten the Lower Looper
The lower looper thread must pull the upper looper thread to the back side. Continue to tighten it until it has succeeded in pulling these upper looper threads to the back.

Shorten the Stitch Length
In a rolled hem, the threads should completely cover the fabric. Therefore, the stitch length must be shortened to 1 or 1.5. Some sergers will have a rolled hem setting on their stitch length dials rather than numbers.

NOTE:
Not all fabrics are conducive to a rolled hem application. If the fabric is stiff, a rolled hem may not be an option. The best hem for this is a narrow 3-thread flat or balanced seam.
